One of my favorite “Kentucky” foods is Kentucky Hot Browns. Hot Browns were created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky and has become a favorite with the Kentucky Derby crowds.

I don't remember where I was when I had my first Kentucky Hot Brown. I know I wasn't at the Brown Hotel and I wasn't in Louisville. I enjoyed the sandwich so much and recreated the Hot Brown to enjoy at home whenever we wanted.

The Hot Brown is an open face turkey sandwich. It is topped with a cheese sauce and bacon and tomatoes and a dollop of sour cream. I'm not sure that my cheese sauce is the same, but it's good anyway. And of course, Harold has his Hot Brown without tomato or sour cream.

We always have Hot Browns on Derby Day (which is like a holiday for us), but we have them at other times as well. The sandwich is great made with left over turkey, but if that is not an option we try to get a good quality shaved turkey deli meat.

Are you a Hot Brown fan? Do you have a favorite copycat recipe? Tell me about it! The kitchen door is always open and there is always room for one more at the table.
